Statues of the Great: Gwanghwamun Square

Happy Thursday everyone! :)

On our second day in Seoul, we visited Gwanghwamun Square which features statues of the two most respected historical figures in Korea- King Sejong the Great and Admiral Yi Sun-shin. In addition to the statues, the plaza also has a water fountain named the 12.23 Fountain in honor of the twenty-three battles that the admiral fought with twelve ships. Perhaps the most interesting feature is the waterway that runs 365 meters with major events from 1392 2008 recorded on the floor. Unfortunately, we didn't see it until nighttime and by then it was impossible to get a picture of it :( I hope you all enjoy the other pictures though!

This impressive scenery greeted us as soon as we exited Gwanghwamun station.

Admiral Yi Sun-shin from the Joseon Dynasty. Famous for fighting off the Japanese during the Imjin War and is well-respected by both Korean and Japanese admirals.

Statue of King Sejong the Great who is known for having a large hand in the creation of Hangul.

Gwanghwamun Square is also known for its pop-jet fountains which regularly spout water during certain times. We went back to the square at night and were rewarded with a light show :)

Colorful fountain light show with Admiral Yi-Sun shin as he towers over the children playing. In a way, I seems as if he's watching over them.

Thank you so much for reading and I hope you have a wonderful week! Next post will feature Gyeongbokgung Palace :)
